HISTORY, PRESENT & FUTURE

GOLF TEACHING PROFESSIONAL: BREWSTER BASSETT

I have dedicated the last 30+ years learning and exercising the best Methods & Approaches that have been proven through time to provide golfers the best opportunity to gain a better golf experience.

MY STRUCTUREGOLF STORY

In 1987, I left Philadelphia with my set of Titleist blades in the trunk and an ambition to play on the PGA Tour. On my way down to play on the mini-tours in Florida, I took my first official lesson from ex PGA Tour Pro in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina to see what he thought I needed to accomplish to be successful at that level.

With some great advice to gain more needed tournament playing experience, I felt the best opportunity for my game would be to get a job at a golf course so I could practice and play as much as possible to get ready for the show. After a short apprenticeship and encouragement from my Head PGA Golf Professional, I gave my first lesson in 1989 working in the resort golf industry in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and got hooked on helping other golfers improve the experience of their game. I decided to dedicate my efforts on helping those who ask for my knowledge, passion and perseverance in bringing out their potential as students of this great game.

I attribute most of my success with teaching to my invaluable working education of 7 years with "Golf Digest Schools" starting at the Sea Island Golf Club/The Cloister Hotel in St. Simon's Island, GA. There I spent 2 years apprenticing/teaching with 6 "Top 50" instructors and then was hired as a PGA Teaching Professional for Golf Digest's first Driving Range & Learning Center in Edison, NJ., then promoted to Head Golf Schools Instructor at Blue Heron Pines Golf Club in Cologne, NJ and The Barefoot Resort in North Myrtle Beach, SC. Published articles in Golf Digest Magazine. Featured in January 2001: Breaking 100-90-80 “A Guide to Scoring Basics”.

After Golf Digest magazine sold the Golf School division to John Jacobs Golf Schools, I left to open my own golf school, "Foundations Golf Schools and Academies" out of The Long Bay Club in Longs, SC (Myrtle Beach area). In three years developed cooperative locations AZ, CA, FL, GA, NJ, VA and TX with Platinum Vacation Schools offered in Bermuda. With the recession looming the vacation Golf Schools business slowed so I needed to look for other opportunities/locations to grow the game.

After spending 2-years in the Virginia D.C. Metro area trying to develop a New Golf Academy home, I fortunately found a great opportunity in the Atlanta-Metro area with Canongate Golf Clubs in 2007-. As a PGA Teaching Professional and later Director of Instruction for Canongate Golf in the South-Atlanta Metro area for 3 years.  I have spent the last 10 years developing players of all abilities and ages through private, group and instructional programs with the emphasis on Developmental Players Programs. Goal, to help grow the game, for all ages, as well as develop those committed players to their fullest potentials and beyond with focus on Improving the experience of their game with measurable levels of success.

I believe the key to success with teaching is Knowing WHEN...
"Know WHEN to be the teacher and share the appropriate knowledge...
Know WHEN to stand beside the student and share in the experience with them...
Know WHEN to ignite self-confidence with a spark of discovery then stand back and watch them flourish."

The greatest lesson I have learned throughout the years is that those who spend time with the game are better people for the lessons the game can teach them."
